In the first module of this class you will focus on two texts
from Favorite Folktales from around the World (1986), namely
“The Tall Tales” and “Catherine, Sly Country Lass.” In your paper you will focus on one (1) particular topic,
that is either apparent in one or both of the tales. You do not have to write on both tales, but you can if you
wish to. The main topic of the module is “Telling Tales: Audience and Agency,” therefore I want you to discuss
the role of the storyteller and the audience in your paper and connect it to your main thesis. You can and must
choose your own topic / thesis for this paper.
Texts to read:
 “The Tall Tales” (30)
 “Catherine, Sly Country Lass.” (33)
Some key questions for this module are:
– What is the role of the storyteller?
– Who is the audience? What is the role
of the audience?
– Which “opposites” do you see in the
tales and what do you make of them?
– What is portrayed as good and bad?
Components, format and deadlines:
The module will be graded based on the following components:
– Mind map, including a topic, a thesis and at least 2 quotes per argument
– Draft, min. 2 pages. (~600 words)
– Final Paper, min 3 pages. (~900 – 1000 words)
The draft and the final paper must to be submitted via HuskyCT (see dates below) with the following
formatting:
 Font: Times New Roman
 Font size: 12 pt
 Line spacing: double spaced
 Remember to add a header to your paper (including your name, class section, my name, and a title)
If you do not follow these guidelines (even in your draft), I will take points off in your final paper!
Whenever you quote make sure you use quotation marks and provide the page number right after:
Example: “Once upon a time there was a gentleman who married” (Perrault 1)
