Students will write a short (3-4 pages) analytical essay on a single scene from Citizen Kane. The essay should examine and deconstruct all of the choices within the scene- cinematography, composition, editing, sound design, production design, etc.- and discuss their impact in terms of the story, hypothesizing why Welles and Toland made the choices that they did.
The only scenes that you may not examine are:
scenes that are discussed by Bordwell and Thompson in Film Art
the “Breakfast” scene discussed in class
the scene with Susan’s attempted suicide, which is discussed in the attached example essay
If you reference, you must properly cite and include a Works Cited page. All papers will be examined by Turnitin for originality.
